Obituary for Betty Salem



Betty Salem, 79, of Hopewell, VA and formerly of Ocracoke Island, NC passed away on July 6, 2014 at her home in Prince George, VA.

Mrs. Salem was born in Hopewell, VA.  She was the daughter of the late Thelma and Carl Slocum. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Salem Jr., her brother Carl, and sister Gayle.

Betty was an amazing mother, grandmother and devoted wife. She was an avid fisherwoman, and was an member of the Tiderunners of Ocracoke. She fished over 20 years in the Ocracoke Invitational Fishing Tournament on Ocracoke Island. She enjoyed bowling, painting and making her own fishing lures. She also was a huge fan of stock car racing.

Mrs. Salem is survived by her oldest son Robert Slocum and wife, Jenny, of Satellite Beach, Fl.; daughter Joyce O’Neal of Beaufort, NC, and youngest son Harry M. Salem III and wife, Greta, of Oaksboro, NC. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Jennifer Slocum and Carmen O’Neal, and three great grandsons, Brandon, James and Ayden; also special friend Marty Riggan.

A private memorial service to be held at later date. J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home will be handling arrangements.
