The Ocracoke icon is under new management, and offering organic and whole foods.

The Community Store, originally established in 1918, went out of business in the spring of 2012 for the second time in the last decade.

In November 2013, the entire Community Square was purchased by the non-profit Ocracoke Foundation, with the intent to preserve the historic buildings and retain the community feel of the working waterfront. The Foundation also hoped to see the Community Store reopened to provide groceries and general merchandise in the heart of the village.

A young and energetic couple, Josep Ramunni and Lauren Strohl, stepped up to lease the building and bring it new life. They opened for the season on Memorial Day weekend, and have been adding new items to their inventory ever since.

They're proud to carry North Carolina-grown organic produce, as well as delicious homemade breads, rolls, and pies baked by Lauren for her Graceful Bakery business. There's a nice selection of Boar's Head meats and cheeses, and dairy products from Homeland Creamery in Julian, NC.

They carry a selection of beer, wine, cold drinks, coffee, and iced tea. There are assorted dry goods, and plenty of snacks and candy for your salty or sweet tooth. And the wonderful smell of freshly-popped corn greets you as your enter.

In addition to groceries, the Community Store will carry some automotive and marine supplies. They sell locally-made t-shirts by Hard Core Tees, and a selection of toys and games for kids.

The popular Homegrown, Handmade Market/Art Co-op remains in part of the store, so you can shop for art and veggies at the same time.

Joseph welcomes suggestions for what the store should offer.

"It's a work in progress," he said.

The Community Store is open every day, from 8am – 7pm.
