Press Release
Friends of the Library to Host Meeting and Reading

Please join us as Kelley Shinn explores the link between madness and creativity and reads excerpts from her latest work.

All are welcome to the library on Tuesday, March 25th for the annual FOL membership meeting. Our special guest will be Ocracoke FOL's Writer-in-Residence Kelley Shinn, who will read excerpts from her latest work.

Kelley Shinn is a graduate of the Hollins University Creative Writing program, and has taught courses on creative writing and narratives in medicine for the last eight years at various universities in Virginia and Ohio.  In 2006, she was the winner of the Melanie Hook-Rice Novel-in-Progress Award.  Excerpts from her upcoming memoir, No Parking on the Devilstrip, which tells the story of Kelley's experience losing her legs at the age of sixteen and subsequently communing with landmine survivors a decade later in Bosnia-Herzegovina, were nominated last year for a Best American Essay and multiple Pushcart Prizes.  She currently resides on Ocracoke Island, where she is the Friends of the Library 2013-14 Writer-in-Residence.

At the meeting, FOL will also introduce you to their newest board members and let you know all the good stuff they've been supporting and funding at the library over the past year.

There'll be refreshments, too!
