Paul Tine Files for Re-election

Press Release
Representative Paul Tine was joined by his wife Whitney today as he filed for re-election at the Dare County Board of Elections in Manteo.
Tine currently serves in the North Carolina General Assembly as the representative for House District 6, which covers Dare, Hyde, Washington, and part of Beaufort County.

“I am proud to serve the people of Eastern North Carolina, and I look forward to continuing my work to promote job growth, invest in transportation, improve education, and ensure that the voice of our rural areas is heard in Raleigh. We've made some progress, but there's still a long way to go, and I remain dedicated to creating an environment where jobs can grow in the district,” Tine said.

Rep. Tine says he is focused on the district and the growing disparity between the east and rest of the state.  “The real fight in Raleigh is not Republican versus Democrat but rural versus urban.  When we have 11 members representing Wake County and only one representing three and half counties, I have to work extra hard to make sure we get our fair share,” said Tine.  “We have challenges other areas don’t have from the Bonner Bridge, to ferry tolls, to insurance increases, to healthcare access, to significant poverty.”

Tine, a small business owner and insurance agent, will continue to bring his extensive private and public sector experience to the legislature in a second term. Rep. Tine has earned a reputation in the General Assembly for reaching across party lines to get results. He sits on over a dozen committees overseeing areas ranging from education to transportation, to commerce and job development.  He even earned a rare leadership position as a freshman as Vice Chair of the Regulatory Reform Subcommittee on Business and Labor.  Tine passed a number of bills and several amendments into law with bipartisan support since taking office.

One of his proudest achievements was passing the first major piece of homeowner’s insurance reform out of either chamber in several years.  Passing the House 116 to 0, this bill would help fight insurance increases by requesting better information from the companies and bringing more transparency to the rate making process. He continues his work to have the Senate take it up in the short session later this year.

Paul Tine has also been an outspoken opponent of Congress’ flood insurance rate increase from the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012. "I built a bipartisan coalition of 14 state legislators from 20 coastal counties in North Carolina to send letters to the President and Congressional leaders opposing the implementation of the flood insurance rate increase from the Biggert-Waters Act," Tine said. "Not only is this increase a bad idea as so many families are trying to get back on their feet in today's economy, but it penalizes those that followed the rules before the federal government changed the playing field on them.”

“Many people feel disenfranchised by a government that isn't in tune with the struggles of the average North Carolina family. That's why it's so important to cut through the gridlock and work with people on both sides of the aisle to make sure that the needs of the people are met,” Tine said. "I will continue put the needs of our district before those of any party agenda."

"Representing a district like District 6 requires a balanced approach; I have worked hard to put an emphasis on being accessible and listening to the views of the people, regardless of their party affiliation. In this job, you represent all of the people, not just the members of a single party," Tine said.
