Rep. Paul Tine Requests Opening of National Seashore

Press Release

Rep. Paul Tine (Dare – D) sent a letter today to North Carolina’s leadership for help in lobbying the President and Congress to open the nation’s parks during the federal shutdown.

“Much of our economy in this region is based on our access to the beaches and waterways,” said Tine.  “Several of these assets are controlled by the National Park Service, and we are being denied the right to use what belongs to the people.  This is a serious situation that needs to be addressed immediately.”

Representative Tine stated that he had been in contact with the Park Service and that he had reached out to the offices of Senators Burr and Hagan to see what flexibility in the management there might be during the closures.  Beyond access to the beaches, Rep. Tine expressed particular concern with Avon Pier, the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, the boat ramps, and non-profits like the Lost Colony.

“The Park Service was able to work out some access in spots, but they maintain that legally they have to close,” said Rep. Tine.  “The Avon Pier and the Fishing Center apparently have contracts stipulating that they must close when the Park does.  The best thing that can happen is to get these parks open—plain and simple.”

Rep. Tine’s letter was sent to Governor McCrory, Speaker Tillis, and Senate Pro Temp. Berger.
