Updated 10 years ago

The bridge should be re-opened by Sunday, April 14.

Please check out the detour around the Alligator River bridge.

Beginning Tuesday, April 2 at 12:01 a.m., the North Carolina Department of Transportation will close the drawbridge on U.S. 64 over the Alligator River in Tyrrell and Dare counties for two weeks.

The bridge will be closed to all traffic from Tuesday, April 2 through Sunday, April 14 as crews replace several mechanical parts under the swing span part of the bridge. Due to the amount of use, the mechanical components of the bridge are worn and rehabilitation work is being performed in the hopes of preventing future closures to the bridge.

During the closure, motorists traveling from Columbia should use the following signed detour:

  • N.C. 94 South to U.S. 264 East to U.S. 64

Motorists traveling from Dare County should use the following signed detour:

  • U.S. 264 West to N.C. 94 North to U.S. 64

NCDOT is working with the Inter County Public Transportation Authority (ICPTA) and Hyde County Transit to provide shuttle service to hotel employees who live and work in the areaduring the bridge closure at two park and ride locations.
