An Open Invitation from Ocracoke Alive

December 2012

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter on behalf of Ocracoke Alive to the community.  I want to thank all of you for your interest in and support of Ocracoke Alive throughout 2012.  It was a great year for the Ocrafolk Festival, Ocrafolk School, and the newly acquired Skipjack Wilma Lee. If you missed the membership meeting the other night, you can visit our website for more information about these amazing community projects at www.ocracokealive.org.

If any of the three projects currently underway interest you, Ocrafolk Festival, Ocrafolk School or the Skipjack Wilma Lee, please don't hesitate to contact us about how you can get involved.  We are always looking for new volunteers, ideas and energy.  Don't worry if you aren't sure what you can offer.  Ocracoke Alive would love to have your help and we have lots of ways to make good use of whatever skills you might be able to offer.

As we bring this year to a close and move into 2013, we will be working hard on the development of a new committee to bring a new focus to Ocracoke Alive--Community Arts Programming.  The goal of this group will be to develop a calendar of events and activities that folks would like to see happen on Ocracoke.

We hope that you will consider bringing your talents and ideas forward and join us at this exciting time as we embark on this new adventure. If you (or someone you know) would like to be involved in this brainstorming/planning committee, please send an email immediately to: David Tweedie, info@ocracokealive.org, so that you can be put you on the list of people to keep in the loop.  We plan to have a meeting in early January to get things started.

What is Community Arts Programming?

Through Community Arts Programming, Ocracoke Alive hopes to facilitate the creation of arts classes, workshops, and activities in our island community. There is already a lot going on here and Ocracoke is chocked full of incredibly talented folks.  Ocracoke Alive would like to help connect folks wishing to teach with those wanting to learn.  We would like to publish a year-long calendar that includes all of the opportunities in a single place for residents and visitors.

Here are some of questions we might ponder:

1. What sort of classes/workshops/activities would folks like to see offered for adults, kids, and family groups?

(i.e. painting, sculpting, woodworking, dance, drama, filmmaking . . .)

2. Who in the community might be interested in teaching a session?

3. What time of year/week/day should the sessions be offered?  Where is there a need for programming (i.e.  Kids and visitor programming in the summer; Adult programming in the off season, etc.)

Please let us know of your interests so that we can make sure that you are notified about meetings and plans.  With your help we feel that this can be our greatest year yet!

Thanks so much!

David Tweedie
