Fisherman Drowns at South Point

A 72 year old visitor was pulled from the Atlantic yesterday around 11:15 a.m.

He went into the water near South Point to retrieve his fishing rod, which had been pulled from it's holder, said Ranger Ed Fuller.  The shoreline drops off steeply near the inlet, and the victim was swamped by his heavy coat, jeans and boots.

"Other fishermen helped recover the victim and started CPR," said Fuller.  NPS and OVFD were first on the scene and continued CPR until EMS arrived.  The man was transported to Ocracoke Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The visitor from Fletcher, NC was fishing with a friend and staying at the Pony Island Motel.
