Blast From the Past: July 4, 1939
To help you celebrate the birthday of our country, we'd like to share a little of Ocracoke's holiday history with this Hyde County Chamber of Commerce brochure from July, 1939. Going all-out for the 4th of July is a long tradition on the island, as this glimpse into the past proves.
Vote for the circa-1939 tradition you'd like to see revived.... will it be the boat races in Silver Lake or the Bathing Beauties Contest? The fiddlers' contest or the banquet at Ocracoke School?
To view the brochure pages, just click on any of them to enlarge. To make them even bigger (and easier to read) zoom in with your computer ("command" and "plus sign" at the same time).
Thanks to Robin Payne for sharing this Blast from the Past with the Current. She has the original at the Ocracoke Working Watermen's Exhibit.
