Groceries and Supplies are on Their Way

Need a toothbrush? They'll arrive today.

With the ferry situation as dire as it is, many folks on Ocracoke were worried about dwindling supplies. Calm reassurance came from Trudy Austin at the Variety Store.

She said that Nash-Finch, the main grocery supplier for the store, "graciously agreed" to make a delivery by way of Swan Quarter this morning.

"We need toothbrushes," she said. "I think we sold a hundred of them." Over the past few days, the ferries left Hatteras daytrippers stranded on Ocracoke, in need of basic hygiene supplies.

Trudy also said that store owner Tommy Hutcherson is working on getting fresh veggies delivered by the same route.

Shallow water won't stop the U.S. Postal Service!

Ocracoke postmaster Celeste Brooks said that the mail arrived Wednesday on the Swan Quarter ferry. Today the truck will travel to Ocracoke by way of the Hatteras ferry and leave on the 12:45 boat to the mainland.

They have to use the Hatteras ferry Thursday morning because the Swan Quarter ferry is already full. It's difficult now to get reservations on the sound ferries. (Note to travelers: call early!) The mail truck cannot supersede other ferry traffic unless or until a state of emergency is declared.

"The mail has been delivered to Ocracoke and dispatched from Ocracoke every day this week," Celeste said.
