Hoop-A-Thon, Dancin' to the Rockers, baseball, litter sweep, and so much more happening this weekend!

Tomorrow (Saturday, April 21), it’s time for the annual Ocracoke Child Care Hoop-A-Thon! It starts at 11 a.m. in the Ocracoke School gym. Come on out to watch the littlest Ocrakids show off their slam dunks.

The competing teams are the Tiny Tornados (ages 2 – 3), the Purple Dinosaurs (ages 3 – 4), and the Little Caterpillars (ages 1 – 2). Please consider sponsoring a child or team at the $25, $50, $100 or $500 level.

There will also be Adult and School-age Shoot Out competitions. ($5 to play if you’re a grown-up; $3 if you’re a young’n.)

At noon, you can enjoy some delicious Mexican food or home baked goods.

All proceeds from the Hoop-A-Thon will support the non-profit Ocracoke Child Care center.

Come out a little earlier and join in the community Litter Sweep!

The Litter Sweep is sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and will last from 10 am to 12 noon. Meet at the school to pick up supplies (trash bags, safety vests and gloves.)

Head up to Hatteras Saturday afternoon for the 1 p.m. opening pitch of the Blue Claws youth baseball game, followed by the Raptors game at 3 p.m.

Ocracoke Currents 4/20/12

Spend Saturday night dancing to the Ocracoke Rockers! Ocracoke Heating and A/C is throwing a party in appreciation of 25 years of business on the island. The invitation reads:  “Eat, Drink, be Merry and DANCE!” Who are we to argue? Come on out to the Community Center from 6 ­– 10 p.m. to join the fun.

While you’re enjoying your Sunday (rain, rain, go away!), be sure to keep an eye out for the British invasion – of cars. The North Carolina MG Car Club will be arriving in the morning and staying overnight on the island. More information is here.

On Monday, April 23rd there’s a Sustainable Community workshop sponsored by Saltwater Connections. Lunch is at 11:30; the meeting begins at 12:30. It all happens at the Community Center. For more information about the workshop, click here.

If you’re planning ahead for next week, take a deep breath… there’s a lot to get ready for.

Next weekend there’s a special exhibit opening at the OPS Museum, Portsmouth Homecoming, the first annual 5K run, Ocracoke high school prom, one-stop voting at the Church Rec Hall, and Girl Scout Sunday at the Methodist Church.
