On Saturday, March 31st, the Ocracoke School Running Club kids traveled to Ayden, NC to participate in the Love A Sea Turtle 5K trail run.

Ms Kitty Mitchell, Ocracoke School’s art teacher and running club coach trained the kids for the race, running with them after school. She also ran the 5K and placed 2nd in her age group.

Ocracoke freshman Carlos DeLao placed 2nd overall in the men’s division, with a time of 20:13. Fifth grader Jeyson Resendiz came in a minute later at 3rd place.

In the male age 1-15 division, fifth grader Colby Austin crossed the finish line first with a time 22:04.

In the female age 1-15 division, 7th grader Karen Perez placed second with a time of 22:45. Running fast runs in the family; her mother, Lulu Perez, placed 3rd overall in the women’s division with a time of 22:50.

Another mom, Helena Stevens ran with her son, Russell. She placed 3rd in her age group, and Russell, who’s in third grade, placed 8th.

“The kids were not only super fast, but they were great fun and really good sports,” said Kitty.

Ocracoke can be really proud of all our great runners. We can’t wait to see them cross the finish line at Ocracoke's own 5K later this month!
