Current Events This Week!

We’re heading into another busy, busy week on Ocracoke.

Current Events This Week!

Top of my list is getting in my Ocracoke School Plant Sale order form. I loooove the plant sale. It combines gardening and buying things for a good cause – two of my top priorities – and it’s one of my favorite signs of spring! The plants are strong, healthy and good quality, and the sale has been a popular fundraiser for over 20 years. There are annuals, perennials and veggies to order and also hanging baskets (I liked to order the “mixed” basket and let them surprise me.)

Teachers Leslie Cole, Jennifer Garrish, and Janie Borek organize the sale and reap the benefits for their classrooms. According to Leslie, Jennifer can purchase most of her science lab needs with plant sale funds, and Leslie uses her share to help bankroll the Washington, D.C. trips that the entire high school goes on every four years.

The teachers have decided not to order many extras this year; pre-ordering is the way to get your plants. Plant sale forms are available at the school, Variety Store, and post office. Bring them to the school office by March 13th. Pick-up day will be Friday, March 23rd beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Tonight kicks off the week with an Ocracoke Alive meeting at 7:00 p.m. at Deepwater Theater.  OA is the non-profit group responsible for the Ocrafolk Festival. They’re putting together volunteer committees to help with all aspects of the Festival, so please consider getting involved. This year’s Festival is scheduled for June 1 – 3. As a member of the performer selection committee, I can tell you that I am really excited about some of the new acts we’ve invited this year! And, of course, we’re always happy to the familiar faces of returning performers. It’s going to be great!

What to do Tuesday night with so many choices?

Current Events This Week!

First there’s the WOVV 90.1 public meeting and potluck. The potluck (bring snacks, dips, or desserts) begins at 6:00 p.m. The meeting is at 7:00 p.m. Come out to learn what’s happening at YOUR community radio station and to find out how to get on the air!

Also on Tuesday, is an open house at Books to Be Red for the Island Weavers Exhibition, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Over the past four years, a basket-weaving fever has spread through Ocracoke! Paula Schramel, Reggie Mosser, Cindy Fiore, Gael Hawkins, Mary Bassell, Lori Masaitis, Norma Sigal, Melinda Sutton, Amy Howard and Leslie Lanier will be sharing their fabulous creations. There’ll be a huge variety of baskets, from simple to complex, tiny to huge, and made of all kinds of materials. Come out to be impressed!

On Wednesday, bring your afternoon munchies to the Girl Scout Cookie Sale at the Variety Store, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Satisfy your sweet tooth and support the local Brownie troop!

Wednesday night brings us another Pub Quiz night at Gaffer’s. Sadly, I won’t make it this week. Can my team win without me? It remains to be seen.

And don’t forget Thursday night’s Book Club meeting at the library. They’ll be discussing The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell at 6:30 p.m.

Have a great week! I will be keeping up with Ocracoke events from the Buckeye State, so please contact Jenny if you have any pressing Ocracoke Current needs.
