Press Release

Ocracoke’s little league baseball players, coaches, family and fans have been having so much fun this spring that the joy of it should be jumping off the page.

The Ocracoke Marlins (7-9 year olds) have been playing their hearts out with the Hatteras Island Little League. The Marlins have played opponents from Hatteras including the nefarious & hard-hitting Mariners, the difficult & ace-fielding Dodgers, and the infamous & tough-playing Nationals. Our hometown heroes have a 7 Win – 2 Loss –1 Tie record so far this spring.  Every player on the Marlins team has gotten a base-hit and scored a run this season!

Coach Jim McClain said, when asked about the team’s record, “We only look at the scoreboard when the umpire tells us the game is over and then we line up to shake hands ‑ good game.”  Assistant coaches Jason Wells, Rob King, and Derek Rogers-Gilliam have been tireless in making this season a success for the kids.

Coach Jim remarked that "There have been extraordinary defensive plays and some incredible hitting this season. I would love to have every player’s accomplishments noted in the newspaper, but what is most important is that we always try our best, let our mistakes go into the past, support our teammates and....have fun playing baseball.”

Babe Ruth said, “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.”  The Marlins are playing baseball as it should be played, with passion, intensity, and joy.  We celebrate our successes, cry over our errors, always have fun, and always play as a team.

The Marlins are not going to let the season end without an event on our home field. There will be a Parents-vs-Players game on Thursday, May 30th at 4:00 at the Community Park. Come out and cheer on the kids (odds-are that they are going to whip the parents…..no betting – it's little league!).
