Ocracoke eateries will have lots of Fig items – both Savory and Sweet – on their menus this week! We'll post the complete list later TODAY! 

Go to the beach! And when you need a break from fun in the sun, check out all these cool things to do in the village! 

NPS volunteers and rangers open the Ocracoke Lighthouse a couple of times a week. (You can go in, but not up!) Stop by the NPS Visitor Center for specific times or check the Current's Facebook page.

The National Park Service hosts interpretive programs on Ocracoke every week. Find that schedule here

Monday, August 14th:

8:30am OCBA Board Members Only meeting @ Fire Hall. No one else is allowed. 

10am: OCBA Contributors' Meeting, 10–11am @ the Fire Hall. The OCBA overlords will deign to hear input from contributors (i.e., dues-paying members) for a whole hour! We plebeians are so lucky. 

1pm: Ferry Division Meeting @ Community Center Come out and here the news about the ferries, and ask questions. 

1pm: OPS Museum Tour – Free!

7pm: Live Music! Jeff Miller @ Dajio

7pm: Night Sky Appreciation Event to Celebrate Cape Hatteras National Seashore's Dark Sky! 7–10pm at the Ocracoke Lifeguard Beach. Bonfire with the NPS Rangers (Bring your own s'mores ingredients). Stories and tales of the Seashore and the Sea, Night Sky Ranger Program, and Photographing the Night Sky. 

8pm: Pirate Show at Deepwater Theater! Join Desiree Ricker, David Tweedie, Gary Mitchell, and Peyton Piquard for a fun, family-friendly analysis of the infamous character Blackbeard the Pirate. 7:30pm; doors open at 7. Read more about "Blackbeard: A Historical, Hysterical Account" here.

Tuesday, August 15th:  

1pm: Porch Talk @ OPS Museum: Book Signing with Karen Amspacher and Barbara Garrity-Blake. Porch talks are fun, informative, and free!

7pm: Live Music! Bryan Mayer @ Ocracoke Oyster Co.

8pm: Live Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote Plus One" at 8pm every Tuesday night. This week's guest is Kim France of Ocracoke and Boone, NC. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

Wednesday, August 16th:

10am: Arrgh! Free piratical program aboard the Skipjkack Wilma Lee with Capt. Rob and Fiddler Dave!

1pm: Kids Create-a-Craft program @ OPS Museum. Bring your kids and enjoy this special program – this week it's "Ocracoke Ponies"! Suggested donation $5 for materials.

1pm: Makers Market on Silver Lake Local art, community offerings, located on the Wahab House lawn, next to Anchorage Inn. Parking at NPS lot. Weekly outdoor arts and crafts market with local and regional artisans.

5pm: Art Opening @ Down Creek Gallery featuring local artist Barbara Adams. Her newest paintings portray Ocracoke, and natural elements of the Outer Banks and surrounding areas. Musical guests are April Trueblood and Kim France; refreshments will be served. Expose Yourself to Art!

7pm: Live Music! Jon Lea @ Dajio, 7–10pm

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote: Just We Two" (just Marcy and Lou!) at 8pm every Wednesday night. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

8pm: Dingbatter's Guide to Ocracoke @ Deepwater Theater. This new comedy-skit show is the ultimate guide for Ocracoke visitors (and residents) of all ages! Join Desiree Ricker, David Tweedie, Gary Mitchell, and Peyton Piquard for answers to all your burning questions. Admission. Doors open at 7:30pm.

9pm: Sing out! It's Karaoke Night @ Ocracoke Oyster Co.!

Thursday, August 17th:

10am: Free program aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee! Learn about Navigation and Make Your Own Compass with Laura McClain.

1pm: Porch Talk @ the OPS Museum: "Ocracoke History" with Alton Ballance. Porch Talks are FREE, informal, informative, and fun! 

3pm: Live Music! Martin Garrish & Lou Castro @ Ocracoke Oyster Company! Come out to hear some amazing guitar playing, 3–6pm

Current Events Week of August 14-20

5pm: There will be a Special Called Meeting of the Hyde County Board of Education on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 5pm in the Information Highway Room at Mattamuskeet Early College High School and Ocracoke School to review and approve the Title I Prayer Certification and Assurances and personnel matters.

6pm: Parents' Night Out @ Ocracoke Child Care. Do you need a night out? Drop off your children for an evening of fun, supervised activities at Ocracoke Child Care. This week on Thursday, August 17th, 6:00-9:00pm. Ages 3+. $30.00/child ($15.00 for second child in same family). Secure a spot by emailing admin@ocracokechildcare.org, or 1st come, 1st served for drop -ins.

6pm: Wine tasting at Zillie's Island Pantry! Summer wine tastings take place every Thursday and Friday at 6pm, and pair five great wines with delicious hors d'oeuvres from the pantry. Space is limited, so make a reservation, and sign up at zillies.com.

7pm: Live Music! Raygun Ruby, your favorite retro-80's band, plays 7-10pm @ Dajio!

8pm: Molasses Creek in concert every Thursday at 8pm @ Deepwater Theater. Doors open at 7:30pm. Reserve your tickets online at molassescreek.com

Friday, August 18th:

10am: Free program aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee! Learn about the Anatomy of a Boat with Tom Pahl. Free and family-friendly!

1pm: OPS Museum Tour. Free! 

6pm: Ocracoke Fig Festival @ OPS Museum! Kick off the Fig Festival with events on the grounds at the OPS Museum, including a Fig Porch Talk with local expert Chester Lynn, a traditional Ocracoke Square Dance with live music by Ocracoke's own Molasses Creek, free fig cake samples, and a Fig Preserve Tasting Contest (tasting tickets are $3 – vote for your favorite!) 6–8pm. 

6pm: Wine tasting at Zillie's Island Pantry! Summer wine tastings take place every Thursday and Friday at 6pm, and pair five great wines with delicious hors d'oeuvres from the pantry. Space is limited, so make a reservation, and sign up at zillies.com.

7pm: Live Music! Kate McNally @ Ocracoke Oyster Company, 7–10pm

8pm: Live Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host Martin Garrish and Friends "Playing Your Ocracoke Memories" every Friday night through November. Beloved island native Martin Garrish shares songs – "sign posts of life" – and enchanting stories about growing up on Ocracoke. $15 for adults/$7 for kids under 12. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

Saturday, August 19th: 

10am: Ocracoke Fig Festival in Community Square Vendor booths, live music (Kim France, Kate McNally, Coyote, Ocracoke kids), and events 10am–4pm, culminating with the Fig Cake Bake-Off at 4pm! Fun and Free! 

7pm: Live Music! Ocracoke Rockers & Friends at the Community Square! 7–11pm, come out and dance the night away! Kate McNally will play at Dajio 7–10pm. 

Sunday, August 20th: 

Relax and prepare for tomorrow's Solar Eclipse!!
