Spring is on its way to your favorite island...

The sleeping sandbar is beginning to awaken for spring. Lots of spring cleaning and projects are in the works as businesses prepare to open for the season. Keep track of openings on our "Who's Open?" page.

Monday, March 6th:

6pm: Hyde County Board of Commissioners Meeting. The agenda and packets for the meeting are here. The meeting will take place via teleconferencing equipment in the Ocracoke Community Center. The public is invited to attend.

Tuesday, March 7th:

7pm: Ocracoke Preservation Society Spring membership meeting @ 7pm at Deepwater Theater. Chester Lynn will be talking about the history of the mail boat Aleta. Enjoy desserts with coffee and tea, and a little bit of history!  

7pm: Coyote Music Den's Winter Jams every Tuesday through March, 7–9pm. Bring your instrument and join in!

Wednesday, March 8th:

6pm: Ocracoke Mosquito Control Board will meet upstairs at the Fire Hall (enter through the front door). The public is welcome to attend.

Thursday, March 9th:

5:30pm: Ocracoke Planning Advisory Board Meeting @ the Community Center. 

7–9pm: Word Play Gathering at Coyote Music DenSpoken, written, stories, songs, something original, or you are reading, any genre, all ages, all "levels" ...

7:30pm: Town Meeting @ Community Center to discuss the proposed tram system and using occupancy tax to pay for it. The workshop-style meeting with the occupancy tax board and the planning committee is open to community members who want to be heard on this issue. There will be a similar meeting on Tuesday, March 7th. 

Friday, March 10th:

Eduardo's Taco Stand opens for the season! Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner! They are getting a new phone number -- we will post that ASAP. Go in person to place your order. 

Saturday, March 11th:

8am: Youth Basketball games in the school gym! Go teams!

3pm: 1st Annual Pride of Hyde Coaches Basketball game! Ocracoke vs. Mattamuskeet! $5 adults, $3 students; proceeds benefit Hyde County Athletics. 

Daylight Saving Time! This is the last day of early darkness! Set your clocks ahead one hour before bed and spring forward into spring! 

Sunday, March 12th:

Another quiet late winter day on the island. You could go to church.... Both churches have 11am services; the Assembly of God also has a 7pm service.

This is Girl Scout Sunday and the Ocracoke Junior Girl Scout Troop will be helping with the service at the Methodist Church. All current and former Girl Scouts are welcome to join us!

Traveler alert: A section of Hwy. 12 in Frisco on Hatteras Island will be closed from 7am–7pm on Sunday, March 12th. 


Looking ahead....

March 17th: St Patrick's Day Parade! Free Registration begins at 3:30pm @ Ocracoke Station. The parade route os from Ocracoke Station to Ocracoke Bar & Grille – the O'Bar – where a single winner will be awarded $550.00 for the best float or group effort. A real live Leprechaun will lead the tomfoolery! All are welcome to join in or watch!

March 17th: End of the Hunger Games Basketball 3-on-3 Tournament

March 24th: Ocracoke School Spring Variety Show 6pm in the School Gym. Proceeds will benefit Ocracoke School PTA. All are welcome to perform -- sign up by March 17th.

6th Annual Ocracoke 10k/5k, 1 Mile Family Fun Run & 2nd Annual Half Marathon will be April 29th & 30th. Register here
