Sound Ferries Cleared for Operation

Press Release
Re-entry restrictions to Ocracoke remain in effect.

Sound Ferries Cleared for Operation
The U.S. Coast Guard has given its approval to the N.C. Department of Transportation's Ferry Division to resume service on the Cedar Island, Swan Quarter and Currituck ferry routes. All three routes will resume scheduled service immediately.

Re-entry restrictions enacted by Hyde County remain in effect for all Ocracoke-bound ferries. Only residents, property owners, vendors, and critical infrastructure personnel with required documentation will be allowed on those ferries.

Crews on the Hatteras to Ocracoke route performed a test run on Monday and discovered that several navigational markers are missing in the ferry channel. The Coast Guard has been notified and will need to replace those markers before ferry service on the route can resume.

The Bayview-Aurora ferry route was also approved to return to service, but water levels in the Pamlico River are currently too high for safe operation.
