Quiet, beautiful fall on Ocracoke, when less is more!

Current Events Week of Sept. 19-25th

There may be fewer events and activities on this week's list, but isn't that really nice? The beach is gorgeous.... and more than enough on its own.

The National Park Service hosts interpretive programs on Ocracoke every week. Find that schedule hereWonderful NPS volunteers and rangers might even open the Lighthouse. (You can go in, but not up!) Stop by the NPS Visitor Center for specific times or check the Current's Facebook page.

Monday, September 19th:

Arrrrgh! Shiver me Timbers! Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Perhaps we can get Capt. Rob to write something new for us today, but until then, enjoy his ITLAP Day stories from years past here and here and here

4:00pm Go Dolphins! Home Soccer game today at the Community Park – and at the same time... Home Middle School Girls Volleyball in the Dolphin Tank (a.k.a. the Ocracoke School gym.) Fear the Pod!

Tuesday, September 20th:

.....Village Thrift Bag Sale! Starting at 10am, fill a large shopping bag with clothes, shoes, accessories for just $5.00!! Woo! Stop by and see all the goodies they have going cheap!

4:00pm Go Dolphins! The Varsity Volleyball girls will take on the Hatteras Hurricanes in the Dolphin Tank! 

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote Plus One" at 8pm every Tuesday night. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

Wednesday, September 21st:

4:00pm Go Dolphins! Home Soccer game today at the Community Park. Fear the Pod!

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote" (just Marcy and Lou!) at 8pm every Wednesday night. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

8pm: The weekly Ocrafolk Opry is tonight! Live music and storytelling by a variety of local talent. Shows begin at 8pm at Deepwater Theater. More info here.

8:30pm: Sing it loud and proud! Come out for Karaoke at the Ocracoke Oyster Company.

Thursday, September 22nd:

9am-Noon: Meet Interim Health Director Luana Gibbs at the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Dept. (in the upstairs conference room). She'll be on the island to meet islanders and answer questions about the services provided by the Hyde County Health Department.

Noon: Sea Turtle Nest Excavation! 

3pm: Live Music! Martin & Lou at the Ocracoke Oyster Company, 3–6pm. Great tunes in the afternoon. 

6pm: Coloring Night at Books to Be Red! Come out to color your stress away! 6-8pm. Books to Be Red provides coloring pages, crayons and markers, and refreshments, and it's FREE! Not sure what Coloring Night is? Read this story and find out!

(No Molasses Creek show tonight -- they got a better offer off the island! Come out to see them next week!)

Friday, September 23rd:

3:30pm: Lego Club at the Library! Come out and build -- the library provides the Legos. For Pre-K through 8th grade kids; kids under 7 must have a grown-up with them. 3:30-5pm.

6pm: Wine tasting at Zillie's Island Pantry! Summer wine tastings take place every Thursday and Friday at 6pm, and pair five great wines with delicious hors d'oeuvres from the pantry. Space is limited, so make a reservation, and sign up at zillies.com.

7pm: Live Music! @ Ocracoke Oyster Company, 7-10pm.

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host Martin Garrish and Friends "Playing Your Ocracoke Memories" every Friday night from March 25th – November 18th. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

Saturday, September 24th:

9:30am Educational Program aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee! "Anatomy of a Sailboat."  During this program, students will come to understand the differences between sail boats and other kinds of boats. They will get to tour deep into the structure of the boat. They will examine and take home “scantling drawings” of the skipjack. Students will learn sailing terminology and classic knot tying. They may even get to take a ride up the mast in a "bosun's chair." All are welcome to this FREE program aboard the Wilma Lee at the Community Store docks.

7:00pm Live Music at Ocracoke Oyster Company. Martin and Friends, 7-10pm.

7:30pm: The Coyote Den is adding a new Saturday night event for the fall: Raygun Ruby Unplugged! That's right -- it's everybody's favorite rockin' 80's cover band in a small, intimate listening room at the Coyote Den in the Community Square. More info at www.coyotemusic.net
