Herding Cats

Press Release

The 2016 fall FREE spay/neuter clinic for island feral cats will be Sept 13-15th.

OCRACATS welcomes back Howard Johnson, DVM from Asheville, NC to conduct a free feral cat spay/neuter clinic during the second week of September. Please check the Bulletin Boards at the Post Office or Variety Store for clinic details and to sign up. You can also register by email:  ocracats@gmail.com

This clinic will be held at the Ocracoke Fire House; many thanks to Ocracoke Volunteer Firemen for their continued support.

Herding Cats

If you have pets that like to roam, we trap at night so keep them in on the evenings of the 12, 13th, 14th and 15th. On the 15th, the vets will take appointments for pets needing to be spayed/neutered or requiring rabies vaccinations. Ear notches are optional for pets.

We are trying to locate areas where there are feral cats that still need to be spayed/neutered. If you have noticed litters of feral kittens near your homes, please note this on one of the sign up sheets or email us. You do not have to be involved with the clinic by putting your name on the list, but we do need your permission to place a trap on your property.

Ocracats members and the vets need volunteer help for all phases of the clinic, specifically assistance with trapping/releasing the feral cats, pre-surgery prep procedures such as washing and shaving the sedated animals and trap assembly & cleaning, lunches and snacks, water for vets and crew. Volunteers are also needed to record information for rabies certificates as well as documentation for keeping track of the TNR surgeries and cats. If you want to help, note you are a volunteer, write your name and phone number on the sign up sheet or email ocracats@gmail.com

We are also looking for lunch donations for the clinic workers on September 13th, 14th, and 15th (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). If you can help, drop an email to ocracats@gmail.com or call Ruth 252-475-0859 or Gael 252-921-0281.

Ocracats would also like to take this opportunity to thank our retail partner, Mermaid’s Folly, and their sales persons who market our Ocracats tees, calendars, and note cards. Their efforts have made a huge contribution to our funds for caring for the feral colonies. Also, a big thank you to all our visitors who drop money in the donation jars, send checks, or simply put out food and water for the kitties near their rental cottages.

Ocracats is proud to be a part of such a generous and sharing community!
