Current Events Week of August 22-28
Summer's winding down on the island, but there's still stuff going on...

The Ocracoke Friends of the Library Used Book Sale is still going on! Stop by during the regular library hours: Weekdays 3–7pm, Saturdays 9am-1pm.

The National Park Service hosts interpretive programs on Ocracoke every week. Find that schedule hereWonderful NPS volunteers and rangers open the Lighthouse a couple of times a week. (You can go in, but not up!) Stop by the NPS Visitor Center for specific times or check the Current's Facebook page.

Monday, August 22nd: 

7:30pm: Pirate Show at Deepwater Theater! Join Desiree Ricker, David Tweedie, Gary Mitchell, and Peyton Piquard for a fun, family-friendly analysis of the infamous character Blackbeard the Pirate. 7:30pm; doors open at 7. Read more about "Blackbeard: A Historical, Hysterical Account" here.

Tuesday, August 23rd:

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote Plus One" at 8pm every Tuesday night. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

Wednesday, August 24th:

9am - 1pm: Makers Market on Silver Lake at the Wahab House Lawn, next to the Anchorage Inn. Visitors can enjoy shopping with local and regional vendors, showcasing their products that include: herb markers, large coffee mugs, ceramic serving spoons, and whimsical catbird sculptures, jewelry designed with porcelain made from china, homemade soap, jams, sweaters, local honey and wooden furniture and wall art. This is a free event. Biking or walking is suggested as there is limited parking. Parking is available at the NPS parking lot.

10am: Outdoor Classroom summer programs are offered every Wednesday at 10am. All programs are free, last approximately 90 minutes, are outdoors, and taught by Elizabeth Hanrahan, a certified wildlife educator. This week, you can learn about the How to Read an NC Beach at the Outdoor Classroom at NCCAT.

10am: Dockside Talk aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee at the Community Store docks. Dockside Talks are free and sponsored by Ocracoke Alive. On Wednesdays, Capt. Rob and Fiddlin' Dave present Pirate Tales and Fiddle Tunes. This program is especially fun for families.

5–8pm: Down Creek Gallery will continue its summer Art Openings with local artist Kitty Martin Mitchell. Kitty's work is greatly inspired by her father Charles R. Martin, who was a photographer. Many other artists inspired her while growing up, as well as Ocracoke Island, its natural beauty, and its resident artists. Kitty explores multiple mediums: oils, graphite, and acrylic paint. All are welcome to the opening; there will be refreshments and entertainment with musical guests April Trueblood and Kim France. Expose yourself to Art!

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote" (just Marcy and Lou!) at 8pm every Wednesday night. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

8pm: The weekly Ocrafolk Opry is tonight! Live music and storytelling by a variety of local talent. Shows begin at 8pm at Deepwater Theater. More info here.

Thursday, August 25th:

10am: Dockside Talk aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee at the Community Store docks. Dockside Talks are free and sponsored by Ocracoke Alive. On Thursdays, Ocracoke Alive board member Tom Pahl will talk about the Story of the Wilma Lee.

11am: Fish Fry and Bake Sale Fundraiser for Gonzalez Family, starting at 11am at Native Seafood. Plates are $12 and will include locally caught fish, coleslaw, and beans. Saul Gonzalez was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Our goal is to raise enough money to send Saul, his wife Jivan, and their three children on a vacation of a lifetime to Disney World. So open your wallets and your hearts, while enjoying a delicious locally caught meal.

1pm: Bonus Last Porch Talk of the Year! Ann Ehringhaus "10,000 Breakfasts" about her 20+ years running a B&B on Ocracoke at 1pm at the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum. Porch Talks are free, informative and fun!

Saturday, August 27th:

11am: Memorial Service for Carl "Toad" Teeter at Ocracoke Assembly of God. Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.

2pm: Celebration of Life for Debbie Womac Bryan at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service, in the chuch Rec Hall.

7pm: Live Music! Shrimp Whistle at Ocracoke Oyster Co at 7pm.

Sunday, August 28th:

11am: It's a special Back-to-School service at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, with a Blessing of the Backpacks. A community potluck will follow after the service, in the church Rec Hall.

5pm: Pick-up softball at Ocracoke Community Park, $2 per player helps support the ballfield!

7pm: Martin and Friends play every Sunday night at Ocracoke Oyster Co, starting at 7pm.

The rip current have been very strong over the past month. Please be careful, and remember, the safest place to swim is at the lifeguard beach. The lifeguards are on duty 9am-5pm, seven days a week.
