OCC to Hold Public Meeting

Press Release

The Ocracoke Child Care Center will begin the season with a community meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, in the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Company.

The meeting will update the community on progress the center has made in the last two years, such as achieving a five-star rating, regaining financial solvency, renovating the building, and upgrading the program, said Amy Johnson, board of directors’ president.

Parents interested in enrolling their children this year are asked to attend.

Volunteers are needed at the center especially in the spring before summer staff arrive. Call 252-928-4131.

Island cooks are busy planning their best soups for the Clam Chowder Cook-off Saturday, March 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Ocracoke Community Center.

All—individuals, businesses, restaurants and professional cooks—are invited to create their best version of traditional and/or non-traditional Ocracoke clam chowder.

One-of-a-kind “Golden Clammy” trophies created by island artist Susan Dodd will be the prizes.

Proceeds of the event will benefit Ocracoke Child Care.

Eleven contenders vied last year and more than 160 tasters sampled the fare.

Traditional means the only ingredients allowed are clams and their juice, water, potatoes, onions, salt pork or bacon, salt, and pepper.  Pepper vinegar and hot sauce may be used as condiments.

“The inclusion of any other ingredients is considered non-traditional,” said Ruth Toth, who is chair of the event.

Details will be on flyers circulated throughout the island.
