Village Thrift is excited to announce its Grand Opening at the new location on Friday, February 19, 1-5pm.
To celebrate, everything in the shop will be on sale for 25% off (for a limited time). Please come see the spacious, light-filled new facility with lots of new merchandise. There will be refreshments and the Village Thrift volunteers will be there to assist you. We have all missed you and look forward to showing you around. For now, please park at the Community Square parking lot across the street. Beginning on Saturday, February 20, the Winter Schedule for Village Thrift will be in effect until April.

Attention all you nifty thrifters and secondhand seekers, your favorite thrift store is back, bigger and better than ever! Opened nine years ago as an antique/thrift store combo by Paula Schramel, Village Thrift quickly became a local, and visitor, staple. Sorting through sweaters and shirts with a cup of Ocracoke Coffee was a favorite pastime of this reporter, but the new location at the historic Dixon-Williams house is a perfect fit.

With all this new space, Village Thrift co-managers Gael Hawkins, Sharon Sjoblom, and Felicity Gage, who have been with the thrift store for the last four years, had their work cut out for them. In typical Ocracoke fashion, the community pitched in with help from the Youth Center board and other local volunteers, cleaning, sorting and donating muscle when the big stuff came through. Everything has come together beautifully, and we’re all ready to dive into the new goods.

Overflow clothing is sent to an Outer Banks non-profit, Hotline, to be used in rag rugs, purses, etc. Proceeds go to crisis intervention, safe houses, advocacy and prevention education services for victims of sexual and domestic abuse. As well as Hotline, extra clothes are given to Annie Mann who distributes these donations to those in need.

Village Thrift’s own proceeds go to the Ocracoke Youth Center in efforts to begin and continue programs such as the new ball field, Boy Scouts, T-ball/Little League, youth basketball, and the list keeps going. So really, it doesn’t matter if you’re buying or donating, you can feel good knowing your dollars are being put to good use.

If you’re coming down for to visit, or find yourself with a bit of spare time, swing by and check out the new spot on Highway 12 (across from the Community Square), scheduled to open by end of February.
