Ocracoke woke up to sunny skies and standing water.

The Super Bowl Sunday storm brought hoigh toide into the village and gusts to 65mph. We never lost power or internet or cell phone service, so it was a relatively comfortable storm, even though it felt like the Broncos defensive line was barreling over my house. Super Bowl parties became Super Sleepovers as the water rose and party-goers got stranded.

We'll post photos of the storm event clean-up later today after we go out and about.

Here's the official words for local officials:

From the Hyde County Emergency Management department:

Wind driven surge has receded in the village of Ocracoke, but there are still pockets of water in the lower elevation areas. Although water remains on some roadways, traffic has not been impacted in the village. Emergency Services personnel are reporting that at the peak, water levels were as high as those observed during the event in October 2015 (approximately two (2) feet of inundation).

NC Highway 12 is impassable at the new section of dune located on the Hatteras end of the island. There is approximately a 600 foot section of dune that has been washed away and is now allowing the ocean to break across NC12. An NCDOT crew is working to clear this area.

Emergency personnel are currently out conducting a windshield assessment, so more information may become available as they access areas that were isolated last night.

From NCDOT Twitter account:

Ocracoke: NC12 impassable at new section of dune, 600’ of dune washed away, allowing ocean to break across NC12. Crews working on this area.

Hatteras - Ocracoke Ferry Route will remain suspended at this time, due to the road conditions on NC HWY 12 in Ocracoke.

My yard last night around 11pm. I think the water got a little higher, but I was glued to the game and missed it. What a mess! Don't worry about the rabbit pen, Bun is safe and dry in the house with us!
