Tuesday, December 1st:

First home basketball game of the season! The Ocracoke Dolphins will host the Hatteras Hurricanes in the Dolphin Tank (Ocracoke School gym)! JV boys at 4, followed by Varsity girls, then Varsity boys. Listen anywhere on WOVV 90.1FM or streaming at wovv.org. 

Wednesday, December 2nd: 

Family Movie Night @ the Library, starting at 6pm. All are welcome to this FREE event! Come out to get in the Christmas spirit with Buddy in the holiday favorite, "Elf." 

Friday, December 4th: 

Coloring Party at Books to Be Red! Come color your stress away, 6 – 8pm. Everything is provided, including refreshments!

Saturday, December 5th: 

Village Thrift Christmas Sale, Noon-4pm. It's not at Village Thrift – it's at 36 Loop Road! Come out and find lots of Christmas decor, winter clothes, and refreshments, too!

Holiday Historic Homes Open House, 3–5pm. This fun holiday tradition features two house this year and is FREE! 

Sunday, December 6th: 

Library Cookie Swap, 2pm at the library. Bring a dozen or more cookies to share; take home the same amount of assorted goodies! Yum! Pre-swap entertainment will be provided by Ocracoke School's 1st grade class.

Monday, December 7th: 

UMW Christmas Dinner at Ocracoke Community Center, 6pm. All the women in the community are invited to join the potluck. Please come and bring your favorite dish, a gift to exchange, and a small donation. The donation will be matched by the UMW and given to the Methodist Home for Children. It's one of the loveliest evenings of the year! 

Hyde County Commissioners meeting, 6pm in the Ocracoke School commons.

Tuesday, December 8th: 

OPS Wassail Party and Community Tree Lighting. 5-7pm at the OPS Museum. Live music, wassail, and treats. Free and festive!  

Wednesday, December 9th:

Ocracoke Civic and Business Association will hold their regular monthly meeting at 7pm at the Community Center. All are welcome. 

Thursday, December 10th:

Santa at the Variety Store! 3:30 – 5pm. No donation or money needed. Come get your pciture taken with the jolly old elf!

Friday and Saturday, December 11th and 12th: 

Holiday Basketball Tournament at Ocracoke School.

Saturday, December 12th: 

Community Christmas Concert, 7pm at Community Center. Performers of all ages! Let Sundae (921-0283) know if you'd like to be in the show. Free, though we are asking for donations of non-perishable food items for the food pantry. And Ocracoke School's 4th grade will be having a bake sale. Quilt raffle tickets and Christmas balloon sales will be available from Ocracoke Island Realty (proceeds benefit Hyde County's Christmas Cheer program). Sponsored by OCBA.

Sunday, December 13th:   Christmas Program at Ocracoke Assembly of God Church, 7pm. Lots of tasty treats afterward. All are welcome!     Monday, December 14th:   Orientation meeting for Meals on Wheels volunteers, 2pm at Gaffer's. Please RSVP to Meals on Wheels coordinator Elizabeth Dyer at 928-3951, if you would like to volunteer. 
Wednesday, December 16th:   Christmas Caroling, meet at Methodist Church at 5pm. Chili supper after the caroling, hosted this year at Ocracoke Assembly of God Church. Songs of joy and peace!   Judging for the annual "Island Celebration" holiday decorating contest, 5:30-7:30pm. Compete with your neighbors for bragging rights! 

Thursday, December 17th: 

Ocracoke School Christmas program, 7pm in the gym. 

Friday, December 18th: 

Choral Concert with the Joyful Band of Singers, 7:30 at the Methodist Church. Wonderful concert of Christmas music through the centuries! Free! Donations to church accepted. Sponsored by Ocracoke Alive.  

Thursday, December 24th: 
Christmas Eve service at the Methodist Church, with the children's Christmas pageant. 7:00pm. 

Wednesday, December 30th: 

Ocracoke Working Watermen's Oyster Roast, starts 2pm at the Ocracoke Seafood Company Fish House. Dessert at the Working Watermen's Exhibit, 3-5pm. 


Thanks to Ocracoke School's art teacher, Kitty Mitchell, for letting the Current use student artwork created for the annual Hyde County Schools Christmas card contest. Ocracoke School has some talented kids!

Looking ahead to the New Year:

Get creative! The 3rd Annual "Ocracoke Through Your Eyes" show will feature small works by local artists – maybe you! Stop by the Museum, pick up a canvas, and be a part of the show! Or call the museum at 252-928-7375 and they will mail you one!  The canvasses are due back to the museum by January 10th. A wine-and-cheese reception and art opening is planned for Saturday, January 23rd, from 5 – 7pm at the Museum.

Wanted: arty people. The Ocracoke Alive Arts Partnership teacher application is open at www.ocracokealive.org  Each week (January-May 2016) features two guest artists, who teach 5 or 6 hour-long classes on a particular medium. Ages of students range between preK – high school. On-island artists receive a stipend and off-island artists receive a week's worth of housing for themselves and up to three guests. Check the website for more details!

Registration is now open for the Ocracoke Island 5K/10K, Family Fun Run, and 1/2 Marathon on April 23rd & 24th, 2016. Check out runocracoke.com for more information!
