Press Release

The N.C. Department of Transportation is anticipating opening N.C. 12 on Ocracoke Island from the Pony Pen to the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry terminal at 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, pending no issues at the next high tide, which will take place earlier that morning.

On Thursday, the NC Ferry Division will run the full schedule on both routes. Tolling and reservations will also resume.

The Ferry Division is also resuming service on its Hatteras-Ocracoke route at 7 a.m. Thursday. The first departure from Hatteras will be at 7 a.m., with the first departure from Ocracoke at 8:30 a.m. The route will then resume its full fall schedule.

The road was closed the evening of Friday, Oct. 2, due to sound-side flooding. N.C. 12 has remained closed due to high water on the road and tidal flooding at the location of a dune that was washed out during the storm.

Crews have determined that water has receded to the point where it is safe for travel. There is still water on the road and drivers are urged to use caution while traveling. Opening the road also allows for the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route to resume service Thursday morning

NCDOT crews have installed protective measures along the dune line to protect N.C. 12, and will work on a plan for reconstructing the dune. As crews continue to work in this area, please use caution and pay attention while traveling near equipment.
