Current Events Week of Sept 28th
You could call it a slow week, event-wise, as we on Ocracoke ease into what should be our more-relaxed fall schedules – but alas, we've still got some worries. Rain-induced cabin fever. Mold and mildew and rust. ORV ramps closed because of standing water. High tides. Puddles. Mud. Mosquitoes. Blisters from go-go boots (maybe that's just me.)
And possibly: Tropical Storm/Hurricane Joaquin.
The government shutdown that was looming has almost certainly been postponed until December 11th (so we will not be in the same position as when it happened before in 2013.) That's good news.
And yay! the ferries are running.
But onward to the events of the week...
Monday, September 28th:
Rain
Tuesday, September 29th:
Rain, some hot, humid sunshine, more rain.
Wednesday, September 30th:
It's Lucky Jenny Scarborough's birthday and she's spending it halfway across the globe in Belgrade, where she is volunteering to help Syrian refugees. Wish her well in the comments; she reads the Current whenever she has internet connection. Hi, Jenny!
Escape the madness of another damp day and join in the craze that's sweeping the nation: coloring for grown-ups! Stop by Books to Be Red between 6 – 8pm for some coloring fun! There'll be refreshments, too!
Thursday, October 1st:
Welcome, October! Let's hope our Congress has gotten their act together by now. We have enough to worry about with the weather.
Friday, October 2nd:
Rain
Saturday, October 3rd:
Ocracoke School's 4th grade class is having a Big Yard Sale and Bake Sale! They're raising money for their class field trips. Come to the Pony Island Motel lawn starting at 8am for clothes, books, toys, baked goods, and more! We are hoping for some sunshine, too!
Kids' Movie Night! Bring your young'uns to the Ocracoke School gym at 6:30pm for a "Halloween Town" movie. $10 for popcorn and candy -- all proceeds benefit the Ocracoke Lady Dolphins basketball team.
Sunday, October 4th:
Bring Fido and his muddy paws to the Ocracoke United Methodist Church for the annual Blessing of the Pets at 2pm. You can also share remembrances of companions you have lost.
