Monday, August 24:
Ocracoke Dolphins go back to school! Today is the first day of the new school year at Ocracoke High School. 181 kids in pre-K through 12th grade will fill the classrooms with the biggest enrollment in the island's history! Welcome new teachers Jeanie Owens (4th grade), Meg Poore (5th grade), and Louise Salerno (middle school math), and a big welcome back to the art room to Kitty Mitchell!
Tuesday, August 25:
Coyote Plus One hosts their penultimate summer show at the Community Center at 8pm. Marcy and Lou will be joined on stage by their friend-from-up-the-beach, singer-songwriter Cristina Garey for some well-crafted spontaneity! Doors open at 7:30pm and admission is $15 (free for kids under 12.) Not on Ocracoke? The live show will be broadcast on the web at concertwindow.com/coyote (cost = $1). Isn't technology amazing?
Special NPS program honoring Founders Day, 12 Noon at the Ocracoke NPS Visitor Center. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act, creating the National Park Service. Founders Day is celebrated each year on August 25 in all of America's national parks to honor the creation of the agency. Join a ranger for a special Founders Day program about the meanings of the National Park Service as we look back nearly a century from its founding, and as we look forward into its future. Stop by the National Park Service Visitor Center to find out about more free ranger programs for all ages, and also when the lighthouse is open!
Go Dolphins! Ocracoke's Varsity Volleyball team will take on the Columbia Wildcats at home in the Dolphin Tank starting at 4pm. This follows their home victory over the Hatteras Hurricanes last week. The next home game will be September 10th. Fear the Pod!

Ocracoke Alive welcomes you aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee for dockside talks on Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays at 11am.
Expose Yourself to Art at Down Creek Gallery, 5 –8pm, featuring work by Meredith Bundy. This will be painter Meredith Bundy first show at the gallery. Ryan Guerra and Aaron LaVigne, will provide amazing live musical entertainment for the evening. Meredith Bundy resides in Virginia, and has spent many of her years here on Ocracoke with her family and two resident uncles, David Bundy and Roy Revels of Zillie's Island Pantry. Meredith’s work consists of a wide spectrum of both abstract and realistic art. She started painting at a young age, and was able to sell her paintings in high school, often being commissioned for specific pieces. She was accepted into a scholarship program at Savannah College of Art and Design at the age of 17 to study architecture, then went on to attend James Madison University; double majoring in studio art and pre-med. Meredith is currently a practicing Physician’s Assistant in Dermatology, and continues her passion for art with her oil paintings.
The Ocrafolk Opry is back for its 15th season at Deepwater Theater. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for youngens. Show starts at 8pm; doors open at 7:30pm. Performers this week include, but are not limited to, Molasses Creek, Rob Temple, Philip Howard, and yours truly.
Thursday, August 27:
Come out to see and hear Molasses Creek in concert at Deepwater Theater! The show starts at 8pm (doors open at 7:30); admission is $15 adults/$7 kids.
Also on Thursday.... Go Dolphins! The first ever Ocracoke School soccer team plays their first ever game against Perquimans Pirates! I know you all would be there to cheer on the Pod, if the game wasn't in Perquimans County.... sadly, all the Ocracoke soccer games will be away this year. But they play at Hatteras twice (9/10 and 9/22), and that's just a ferry ride away, so we hope to see some fans in the stands!
