Who can believe it's August already?

The summer has flown by, and now that it's August, we're in the home stretch. There are just a few more weeks left for many of the fun summer programs. Get it while you can! 

Monday, August 3: 

The agenda and packets for the Monday, August 3, 2015 Hyde County Board of Commissioners meeting are now available to the public. Click here to view the documents. Please note the location of the meeting has changed due to maintenance at Ocracoke School: The meeting will be held at the Ocracoke Community Center (999 Irvin Garrish Hwy, Ocracoke) and in the Hyde County Government Center, Multi-Use Room (30 Oyster Creek Rd, Swan Quarter) via telephone. Commissioners will meet at the Ocracoke Community Center at 4:00 p.m. to open the meeting. Immediately following, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Commissioners will tour properties available for the relocation of the Ocracoke Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Station. The Commissioners will return to the Ocracoke Community Center at 6:00 p.m. to conduct the regularly scheduled Hyde County Board of Commissioners meeting. Several Hyde County employees will be present on Ocracoke for the meeting.

A Tale of Blackbeard! takes the stage again this week at 8pm in the Ocracoke School gym. Singing, dancing, and swordfighting pirates woo talented village girls on the eve of Blackbeard's final battle at Ocracoke! If you saw it last year, you need to see it again – there's a new Blackbeard, new pirates and village girls, and even a new song! And... there's much more space in the new setting in the gym! The show runs Monday nights through August 17. For presale tickets and more info visit http://www.ocracokealive.org.

Tuesday, August 4:

Coyote Plus One howls again! This week Marcy and Lou will welcome Matt Hoggard (known on Ocracoke from his band, Formula) to join them on stage for some well-crafted spontaneity! The show starts at 8pm at the Community Center, and admission is $15 (free for kids under 12.) Not on Ocracoke? The live show will be broadcast on the web at concertwindow.com/coyote (cost = $1). Isn't technology amazing?

Wednesday, August 5:   

Let NPS know what you think! Come out to the Public Scoping meeting from 5:30 – 7:30pm at the Ocracoke School gym. Lots more information here.


Thursday, August 6:

 

Celebrate National Lighthouse Day a day early on Ocracoke! Visit the Oldest Lighthouse at 3pmfor a special ranger-led program. The Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in North Carolina. Learn how this tower is truly part of the Ocracoke community and get a peek inside the base of the tower. Meet at the Ocracoke Lighthouse.  Parking is very limited – we recommend that you walk, bike, or be dropped off. 

 

Come out to see and hear Molasses Creek in concert at Deepwater Theater! The show starts at 8pm (doors open at 7:30); admission is $15 adults/$7 kids.

 

Free and informative summer programs!

Stop by the National Park Service Visitor Center to find out about free ranger programs for all ages, and also when the lighthouse is open!

Ocracoke Preservation Society offers a Porch Talk program every Tuesday and Thursday at 1pm, and a special Kids' Program with a talk and craft every Wednesday at 1pm. There are also regularly-scheduled Museum Tours. Call 252-928-7375 for more information or click here. 

The Ocracoke Foundation sponsors weekly Outdoor Classroom Programs every Wednesday at 10am at NCCAT. More info here

Ocracoke Alive welcomes you aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee for dockside talks on Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays at 11am.
