Testing the hoses

The end of 2014 was a busy time for the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department.

In late November, we pulled all of the attack hose off of the three fire trucks for testing. This amounted to over 4000 feet of hose to be tested. The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) regulations requires us to test the hose at 250 psi for 5 minutes to check for any movement of the couplers, etc. Any hose that fails must be removed from service and replaced.

In December, all of the OVFD trucks had preventive maintenance completed by Van O’Neal and James Paul, with a technician from C.W. Williams doing road test, pump maintenance, etc. After all of the maintenance was completed the two pumpers and the ladder truck underwent pump testing. The test was to determine the amount of water pumped per minute, at what pressure. The pump tests were performed by the tech from C.W. Williams, with the help of Ocracoke Fire Department members. This is another OSFM requirement that must be met each year.

Thanks to OVFD, this fire didn't spread to other close-by homes.

On December 27th we had a call for a structure fire. The RV was a total loss, but there was very little damage to adjacent property. We had the OSFM required number of firefighters on the scene, but we could have used more help after the fire was extinguished. It takes time and manpower to pack up the hose and overhaul the fire scene. We presently have 25 members on the roster, with only 10 to 12 really active members.

If anyone would like to help us serve and protect the Village of Ocracoke, please think about joining the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department. The next meeting is January 8th at the fire station. The next training session, CPR and AED training, will be January 15th. Your help is needed and would be appreciated.

The house 911 address sign sales are still available at the fire station.  We have sold over 100 of the signs and they are starting to show up around the village.  EMS and the OVFD First Responders appreciate being able to quickly locate you if you have a health emergency.

The Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department appreciates all of the support we receive from the local community as well as our off island friends and wish you all a Happy and Safe New Year.
