National Park Service Honors Shirley Helms
Shirley began her career with the National Park Service as a seasonal employee working at the campground on Ocracoke Island, then went to Buxton, on Hatteras Island, for a season. As a seasonal employee Helms started off as a GS-4. About four years ago she was promoted to a GS-5, earned permanent employment status, and began working as a Fee Supervisor. In her current position, Helms is responsible for overseeing operations at Ocracoke's National Park Service Campground, the NPS public boat docks, and the Permit Office.
"I like working for the Park Service because of the people who worked and came here," she said. "A lot of people come from other Parks, and I like working with them. And a lot of people stayed, and I really like them too."
On Friday, December 12, National Park Service and Eastern National employees from The Outer Banks Group gathered at Ocracoke's Ranger Station for a potluck lunch dedicated to Shirley.
Michael Colopy, The Outer Banks Group Revenue and Fee Business Manager, spoke about Helms saying, "I feel a strong bond with Shirley. She's a very hard worker, she takes her job seriously, and it will be hard to find someone as dedicated." Colopy continued by talking about how even though Shirley works hard to do her job well, "when we get together as a group, Shirley always keeps us laughing."
In the near future Shirley hopes to sell her house here on Ocracoke saying, "I won't leave until the house is sold." Once the home is sold she plans on moving to Swansboro, NC. She has friends and family in the Swansboro and Wilson areas and is looking forward to spending time with all of them.
