Ocracoke Current Events 11/17/14

Beautiful sunsets and more happening on Ocracoke this week!

Good news from NPS: South Point Road is open again! It had to be temporarily closed because there was soundside flooding on the road during the November 1st wind event.

On Tuesday, Ocracoke Alive will hold their annual membership meeting. Not a member? You can join at the meeting! It’s at Deepwater Theater at 7pm. All are welcome!

They’ll serve dessert (just bring yourself!) and talk about what this organization has been up to lately. The Ocracoke School arts program is just one of the many projects OA is taking on in 2015.

Dolphins Basketball starts this week! The Dolphins play Tuesday at 4pm at First Flight High School, and then return to First Flight for the Battle of the Beach tournament on Friday and Saturday. Ocracoke's community radio station, WOVV 90.1 (listen online at wovv.org) is committed to broadcasting live at the basketball games this season. The tournament games begin at 3:45pm on Friday and 1pm on Saturday. Tune in to cheer on the Pod!

Last chance for an Uncle Bunkle or Sayrah Safari this week! Jason’s Restaurant closes for the season after the dinner shift on Saturday, November 22nd.

The Flying Melon Restaurant is having a big Yard Sale (indoors!), 9am – 3pm. Lots of stuff, including lots of antiques and collectibles from the old Blue Door! Paula's even selling her big loom.

Everybody’s excited about the Café Atlantic’s Customer Appreciation Dance Party on Saturday, November 22nd. All are welcome! Refreshments will be served! If you’d like to learn to shag before the party, which starts at 7:30pm, come to the Community Center at 2pm and/or 3:30pm for beginner shag lessons with pros Addie Lou and Robbie Leggett. Kids are welcome, too, because shagging is fun for all ages. Read more here!

In other news….

Our wonderful local, independent, amazing bookstore, Books to Be Red (which also happens to be the Ocracoke Current’s first advertiser. Woot!), has been nominated as one of the World’s Greatest Bookstores. We know it’s true; let’s tell the rest of the world. Books to be Red is being considered to be included in a book Footnotes from the World's Greatest Bookstores by Bob Eckstein. Bob is a cartoonist and illustrator and has had work in the New Yorker magazine. He is looking for stories about why you like this shop. They don't have to be long and involved, if BTBR is chosen he will contact them for more info. Please send owner Leslie Lanier an email with your story to bookstobered@gmail.com

Looking ahead….. next week is Thanksgiving! (Already? Where does the time go?) We’ll update this post with information about Ocracoke events for the holidays, and let you about where you can get a Thanksgiving feast without cooking. Mark your calendars for the United Methodist Women’s annual Bake Sale on Wednesday, November 26th at 11am at the Variety Store. They’ll have whole cakes and pies that your family will be thankful for!

The Community Christmas Concert will be Saturday, December 13th at 7pm at the Community Center. If you’d like to perform this year, please let me know. (sundaehorn@embarqmail.com)
