Dear parents and community members,
The 2013 -2014 athletic season was a great success due in no small part to the support provided by all of you. The Girls Cross Country team finished as District and Regional Champs and placed 10th in the State. The Boys Cross Country team also finished as District Champs, as well as Regional runners up and 13th in the State. What a great job for this group of kids! The Girls Varsity Basketball team once again progressed to the second round of the State Championship defeating East Carteret along the way and the Boys Varsity team played strong all year and beat several conference rivals and just missed qualifying for the state tournament. The Middle School Girls Basketball team made strong showings in their league, and the Middle School Boys basketball team dominated ending with a record of 9-1. The Girls Varsity Volleyball team finished the season with 3 wins, however their play was very competitive versus the more experienced teams in the new combined conference. The Girls Middle School volleyball team dominated most of their opponents in the MS conference and the Boys Middle School Baseball team also did well ending the season with a 6-3 record. Thank you to all the coaches and assistants that work with our kids!
From the funds generated via banner sales and concession sales at our home basketball games, the Boosters club was able to purchase a washer and dryer for the school to be able to launder uniforms, more equipment for the concession stand, additional equipment to enable the online streaming of games, and the establishment of 2 scholarships of $1000 each – one for a boy and one for a girl athlete pursuing high education. In addition, we funded the purchase of a “Shoot-Away” system for the basketball teams designed to improve shooting skills.
We would especially like to also thank the Ocracoke 5K/10K Run and Family Fun Run Committee for all their efforts and hard work this past spring and for their $10,500 donation to the Boosters Club. The proceeds from the 2014 Race were divided equally among the Community Park Project, WOVV local radio station, and the Booster Club. None of the work of the Boosters could have been accomplished without the support of our wonderful community, teachers, staff, and parents.
We would also like to thank Debbie Jenkins of Shea Bella, and Tommy and Julia Hutcherson of the Variety Store for helping to sell our Dolphin Apparel. It is fun to see visitors to the Island sporting our Ocracoke athletic wear! Also thanks go out to Scott McNally and Daniela Gilbert from Ocracoke Pizza Company for providing the pizza to sell at concessions! So many parents and community members have contributed to the successes of these teams that we can’t possibly thank everyone individually, but please know that your contributions are much appreciated and recognized.
We are now beginning our 2014-2015 fundraising efforts through the renewals of our school banners. The gym is filled with these banners supporting our teams and is a wonderful indication of the support that our student athletes have from us all! If you already have a banner, the renewal rate is just $150 for the year and includes membership in the Athletic Boosters Club. If you do not have one yet, but would like to purchase one, or know of someone else you think would like to participate, the cost for the first year is $250 and includes a custom banner and membership for the year in the Ocracoke School Athletic Boosters. Of course we also welcome individual memberships for $25 for the year and family memberships for $35 for the year as well!
We are always looking for volunteers for concessions and for new board members, so if you interested in either, please contact our president, David Scott Esham at 252-921-0145.
