Putting the Independence in Ocracoke's Independence Day!

You just can’t keep a good island down when it comes to the 4th of July.

With celebrations cancelled, cottages emptied, and with power limited, it seemed as if we would all wait until next year to catch a parade!

That was not the case this afternoon when Brenda Kremser and her guests, Melissa and Ian, decided they would be a parade. Yes, they decorated their car, donned their red, white, and blue, and drove on out to the beginning of the parade route at 3:00 as was originally planned. With Ian poised on the top of the car holding a box of candy, they were ready to begin their one-car parade when a small float showed up with two guys from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They did not know the parade was cancelled so the two joined together. Philip and Lachlan Howard joined on their bikes carrying small flags, and I met up with them at the end of Lawton Lane. Gary Mitchell was the last to join in his van.

We followed the parade route through the village, down to OPS, and then back again. As the car horns honked, Ian threw his candy to everyone who came out to see the commotion. We waved our flags hollering out a joyous, “Happy 4th of July.” This was the most fun I have had in days. As I said, you just can’t keep a good island down.
