Hot Doughnuts Now!

Jenny Scarborough

You are going to envy me on Saturday.

That's when orders of Krispy Kreme doughnuts arrive. Ocracoke Child Care Director Jennifer Daniels is picking them up --fresh from Greenville-- on Friday, and will have them ready to go by 9 a.m. Saturday, in the school gym's weird anteroom, during the basketball tournament this weekend.

For those of you who live in what I fondly refer to as "America," this may not seem like such a big deal. On Ocracoke, it is. That's another way of saying I'm unlikely to share. I"ve driven two hours round trip to buy Krispy Kremes, which must always be referred to by their full name, and never lumped in with lesser doughnuts.

Order forms must be accompanied by cash or check payment, and can be found at The Variety Store (Thanks, Julia, Tommy and Kathy), the Child Care Center, or from any parent. (Fun fact: Celeste at the Post Office has a kid in day care, and has forms with her!).  Orders must be placed by Wednesday, December 12, by around 5 p.m.

Bags of their house coffee blend are available as well, for $9.  But you know you want the doughnuts to go with it.  A dozen glazed cost $7, and chocolate iced, lemon, raspberry, and kreme filled cost $8.

"Fundraising, donations and parent fees are the only way we have of keeping the center open," said Jen. The non-profit holds at least one fundraiser each month, with the goal of maintaining the high rating the center receives.  Jen also has the goal of giving bonuses or even raises to the dedicated teachers. With parent fees significantly reduced in the winter, fundraising is more vital.

Jen is hoping many other islanders feel they way her husband does: "I'm a cop. I love doughnuts," said Jason.
