Dare County deputies have stepped up to assist Ocracoke officers.

“Dare County is helping out a lot with the road,” said Sergeant Jason Daniels.  “If we have to transport to Manteo, they’ll meet us at the closure.”  Dare has a police Hummer, which they use on the section of Highway 12 restricted to 4WD vehicles.

Ocracoke officers must otherwise take the Swan Quarter ferry, which either involves an overnight stay in the county seat, or one “very, very long day.”

In the past week, the Sheriff’s Department assisted with one involuntary commitment.  There was one arrest for domestic assault.

Around 3 a.m. on Friday, November 23, police  responded to a disturbance call.  A highly intoxicated man was discovered in a vehicle that didn’t belong to him.  The man “couldn’t function” due to excessive consumption, and deputies made sure a sober person helped him back to the boat he stays on, anchored in the harbor.  The owner of the vehicle did not wish to press charges.

Property was recovered after a backyard shed was broken into.  The victim is satisfied to have their property returned, and does not wish to make the trip to Swan Quarter to testify in court.

A few vehicles were stopped for traffic violations; no tickets were written.

“It’s been kind of slow,” noted Daniels.
