Photo Finishers!
The first annual Ocracoke 5K Run attracted 167 runners; 45 were from Ocracoke. Supporters cheered on friends, family and visitors from all over North Carolina and the east coast. Some came from as far away as upstate New York and eastern Tennessee for the event.
The event raised over $10,000, to be equally split between Ocracoke School Boosters Club and Ocracoke Community Radio.
Alfonso "Chito" Guerrero of Ocracoke took first place overall with a time of 18:09. Keith Gray and Joseph Caroppoli of Buxton and Avon, respectively, were hot on his heels. Chito regularly plays basketball, but only started training for the race two weeks ago, said his wife, Kathy.
Mother-daughter duo Lulu and Karen Perez (of Ocracoke!) edged out Buxton runner Angela Cothren for first and second female overall winners. Is it just me, or does Ocracoke seem to be sweeping a lot of sports these days?
