Celebrating the Arts at Ocracoke School
Our visiting artists in the school were: Carlita Ector – dancer, singer, actress who came to us from N.Y.C. and is now off to perform in 6 months of "Hairspray" and "Aladdin" in Las Vegas; Bob Zentz – singer-songwriter who has performed all over the world and recorded numerous albums; Jubal Creech – percussionist and storyteller, also another world traveling performer of African, jazz, latin and numerous other genres of music; Ocracoke's own Kim Meacham – artist, sculptor, blacksmith; and Kitty Mitchell – artist and educator doing plein-aire layered oil pastels with the students.
All of the classes had 2 – 3 sessions with the visiting artists. Students created and performed their own dances with Carlita Ector; learned about music, musical instruments and sang along with Bob Zentz; created circle weavings, card weavings and "ojos de Dios" with Kim Meacham from recycled t-shirts; learned about different rhythms and where they come from and how to call and respond and play polyrhythms with Jubal Creech; and learned the many ways of using oil pastels and drawing from observation with Kitty Mitchell.
Everyone shared what they did in an assembly on Friday. It was amazing what the students were able to do in such a short time.
