The winning team earned 52 of 64 possible points during Gaffer's first pub quiz

on Wednesday, January 25.  Six teams and nineteen players competed.

"Even the old folks had fun," said Leslie Monticone, whose mature group correctly answered a question about the length of Kim Kardashian's second marriage and named two bands that debuted at the legendary New York club CBGB.

"Even though we sucked, it was fun," said Kati Wharton of her team's last place finish.

Volunteer organizers Jocelyn Wright and Jessica Caldwell researched and wrote the questions.  They served as presenters and scorers, although both admitted they would prefer to be playing.  Jocelyn began enjoying pub quizzes during visits to England, and said the idea to host one on Ocracoke had been simmering for a while.

Resist the temptation to look the answers up on a mobile device, said Jessica.  Texting during the quiz will only make you look shady, she pointed out. The breaks between rounds were opportunities to refresh beverages and compare answers with other teams.

Gaffer's hopes to host the event weekly during the winter.  Entry fees are $1 per person, and teams may have up to four members.

"We wanted to offer something fun and affordable," said Gaffer's owner Scott MacNally, who competed on the winning team along with girlfriend Sara Batchelor.

"Fist pump!" said Chrisi Gaskill of their team's runaway victory.  Anchored by Jeopardy! champion Charles Temple, the team was clearly the one to beat.  They donated their winnings to Ocracoke Child Care.

Charles recused himself for the final portion of the quiz, called "Are you smarter than Charles Temple?"  All the questions in that section were ones he had incorrectly answered while competing on Jeopardy! in 2011, winning the Teacher's tournament and participating in the Tournament of Champions.

How does the Gaffer's pub quiz compare to his experience in the studios in Burbank?  "The beer's better," said Charles.
