Ocracoke School Honors Veterans

On Thursday, November 10th, Ocracoke held a special Veterans Day assembly.

The Ocracoke Boy Scout troop, led by Ivey Belch, raised the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance, as students, staff, and community members gathered around the flag circle.

6th grader Katie Kinnion sang the National Anthem, accompanied by the 1st grade class. Seniors Matteus Gilbert and Carson O'Neal gave speeches thanking our veterans for their service to our great country. The 3rd grade gave a rousing cheer, 4th grade read a poem they wrote and dedicated to those who served, and 2nd grade handed out hats as gifts to the veterans.

Local veterans were seated around the flag circle and grouped by their branch of the armed services. Army vets were Jim Borland, Dave Frum, Dave Tolson, Thomas Midgette, Bob Despo, Don Bachman, and John Manning. The Navy was represented by Jim Garrish, and the Coast Guard vets were Reginald O'Neal, Mike Lawson, Ronnie Van O'Neal, Ernie Doshier, and Dan Robinson. All Ocracoke veterans and community members were invited to the ceremony.

At the close of the ceremony, the veterans stood and shook hands with all the staff and students of Ocracoke School.

Ocracoke School was not in session on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11th.
