Sheriff's Department Seeking Information About Sexual Assault Case

An active investigation into last Friday's crime is still underway.

Sgt. Jason Daniels of the Hyde County Sheriff's Department spoke to me briefly yesterday about the sexual assault case that he and the other deputies are investigating.

"We are still working on it," he said. "We don't have anyone in custody and don't have a suspect."

Jason made it clear that he can't share any details of the case in order to protect the victim. He made the decision to go public with Monday's press release because the sheriff's department is hoping someone will come forward with some information that could lead to an arrest.

If you have anything to report (the assault happened in the wee hours of Friday, June 17th) please contact the lead investigating officer, Corporal Jaren Mutro, at 252-542-0617.

Jason is confident in Jaren's investigation skills. "She's very capable," he said. "I assure you that if we need outside help, we do not hesitate to ask." The other deputies on duty on the island are Rob King and Blackburn Warner.

This was the first sexual assault case reported on Ocracoke so far in 2016.
