Dinner and Dancing

This year's prom was another great success, and the social media are buzzing with pix of our local kids looking all beautiful and/or handsome. The Ocracoke Current always claims a press/parent pass and gets photos on the scene! You'll see them here first, unless, of course, you are checking Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter!
Earlier this evening, thirty Ocracoke high school kids, one alum (class of 2014), and two off-island guests enjoyed an elegant and delicious dinner at the Back Porch Restaurant before heading to the Community Center for a rockin' dance. DJ Julio Morales provided the beats. The kids whipped, they nae-nae'd, they douggied, and they wobbled. Julio even took requests, and closed out the night by playing "Kiss," a timely tribute to Prince.
To fuel their dancing, the prom-goers snacked on cream puffs homemade by junior Stacey O'Neal, and an Ocracoke chocolate cake baked with love by Miss Kay.
The kids' shenanigans were watched over by their high school teachers, acting as chaperones: Charles Temple, Lynn King, Flavia Burton, Jennifer Garrish, Susan O'Neal, and Casey Robertson. Principal Walt Padgett attended prom with his intended, Elaine Spencer.
The lovely Arianna Contreras was crowned Prom Queen, escorted by King Dalton Kalna. Both monarchs are seniors and college-bound after graduation.
Kudos to high school history and social studies teacher Leslie Cole, who is the driving force behind prom each year. She gets it all organized, and makes sure the kids pitch in to decorate and clean up.
"It was a blast!" said a local senior, who chose not to be identified. She did not provide details about the after-party.
