Ocracoke To Host Conference Play-Offs

Show off your Dolphin Blue in support of the home team at Tuesday’s games!

The Coastal 10 conference tournament play-off games begin in the Dolphin Tank on Tuesday, February 16th. (Please note date change!) The Lady Dolphins will host the Hatteras Lady Hurricanes at 5pm, followed by the Varsity Boys against the Creswell Tigers at 6:30pm. Fear the Pod!

Both teams go into the play-offs with a great winning season. The Varsity Boys are 14-9 overall, 11-7 in the Coastal 10. The Lady Dolphins are 14-9 overall, 12-6 in conference play.

This year’s first ever Junior Varsity team did not fare so well, ending their season with a 1-8 record. Better luck next year, boys!

Jackson and Julian provided the Current with a wrap-up of the Dolphins’ recent home games.

The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of games, but first we will start out with the Ocracoke vs. Perquimans games on January 27th. There was only varsity for these games. The Ocracoke girls won this game, and with Sydney Austin making a buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter. It was an exciting game with a score of 53-39 in favor of Ocracoke. Our Lady Dolphins had some stats like Sydney Austin scored 22 points, Ingrid Contreras made 10 points, and Bricia Moreno scored 9 points.

Moving on to the varsity boys game. It was a disappointing loss for the Dolphins with a score of 55-60 in favor of Perquimans. Stats from the game from our Dolphins are Evin Caswell scored 11 points, Liam Caswell made 18 points, and Matteus Gilbert scored 3 points. That wraps up the games against the Perquimans Pirates.

On January 30th, the Dolphins hosted the Plymouth Vikings. These games were games that were going to be a tough win. The first game was the varsity girls game against Plymouth. It was a disappointing loss with a score of 54-31 in favor of Plymouth. The Lady Dolphins only scored 9 points in the first half of the game. Contributing to that was number 31 on Plymouth that was 6 feet tall, and the Lady Dolphins could not contain her. In the second half of the game, Bricia Moreno was making the 3-pointers left and right. Some stats from the game are Sydney Austin scored 10 points, Ingrid Contreras made 4 points, and Bricia Moreno scored 15 points.

Moving on to the varsity boys game: It was an exciting win for the Dolphins with a score of 62-54 in favor of Ocracoke. Stats from the game are Evin Caswell scored a total of 32 points, Liam Caswell made 12 points, Dalton Kalna scored 6 points, and Brandon O’Neal made 5 points. That wraps up the games.

The home games on February 1st were against the Mattamuskeet Lakers. The night had some close games and a blowout. The first game was a JV boys game. It was a close game but a loss with a score of 42-49 in favor of Mattamaskeet. The team had to work a little harder in the 4th quarter because Colby Austin fouled out. Stats from the game are: Colby Austin scored 4 points, Kalia Samick made 19 points, Sam Evans scored 6 points, and John Brodish made 7 points.

Moving on to the varsity girls game against the Lady Lakers: this game was a definite blowout with a score of 58-10 and a win for Ocracoke. Since it was such a blowout stats from the game are big like Sydney Austin scored 12 points, Ingrid Contreras made 15 points, Bricia Moreno scored 16 points, and Josie Winstead scored 2 points. Now on to the Varsity boys game. It was an exciting game because Jordi Perez came back from his broken nose injury and they won with a score of 75-63. A reason they won was because Mac Kalna was making 3-pointers left and right. The stats from the game are Evin Caswell scored 17 points, Liam Caswell made 12 points, and Mac Kalna scored 21 points

On February 2nd, Ocracoke hosted the Creswell Tigers, beginning with a middle school game.

The Middle School team was in playoffs, but the high school games were regular games. Starting off with the Ocracoke Middle School game against Creswell: it was a blowout having a score of 56-13 with a win for the Dolphins. There were big numbers in the stats like Perry Austin scored 12 points, Reese Gaskins made 9 points, Mason Fuller scored 6 points, and Parker Gaskill made 9 points. The Middle School team moved on to the semi-finals against Columbia, and lost that game on February 11th. It was a great season for the boys (and one girl – Vanessa Lora)!

Now on to the varsity girls game. That was another blowout game. In the middle of the game, the Creswell coaches were getting a little aggressive and tensions were high. The Lady Dolphins were leading 45-14; Creswell forfeited to Ocracoke in the 3rd quarter, giving the Dolphins the win. Some stats from the game are Sydney Austin scored 14 points, Ingrid Contreras made 10 points, Bricia Moreno scored 12 points, and Karen Perez made 7 points.

Finally, on to the varsity boys game, yet another game that was a blowout with a score of 54-45, with a win for the Dolphins. Evin Caswell had two dunks, and one of the dunks was an alley-oop pass from Liam Caswell! Some stats from the game are Evin Caswell scored 21 points, Liam Caswell made 6 points, Brandon O’Neal scored 15 points, and Dalton Kalna made 9 points. That wraps up the games.

Last week’s games against Gates County on February 6th were very exciting starting off with Maren Donlon singing the National Anthem for the first time. In the first game, the varsity girls pulled off another win with the score being 63 to 34. In that game Sydney Austin scored 32, Bricia Moreno scored 15, Ingrid Contreras scored 8, and Karen Perez scored 6. The boy’s varsity game had a disappointing loss but was very exciting. At the end the final score was 50 to 67 in Gates favor. The ending stats were Evin Caswell with 20 points, Liam Caswell with 14 points, Darvin Contreras with 9 points, and Brandon O’Neal with 7 points.
