Both Dolphins teams had great basketball seasons this year.

This past week marks the end of the basketball season for the Ocracoke Dolphins as the Lady Dolphins lost in the first round of the state playoffs against the Lejeune Devil Pups.

The Ladies fought hard, hanging with the devil pups for the entire game. The Dolphins fell to the Devil Pups by a score of 66-53. Seniors Katie O’Neal, Lucy O’Neal, and Abigail Morris will be missed next year as they played a vital role in getting the program active. All 3 seniors had their own contribution to the team: Katie contributed with her ball handling and assists, Lucy dominated the paint with her scoring and rebounds, and Abby always hustled to every ball and gave 100% effort.

Although the season may not have ended the way that we all hoped for, the Lady Dolphins still posted an impressive 16-8 record and 13-5 in conference play, with their most impressive win of the year coming over powerhouse Plymouth.

The boys' season ended on Saturday February 14th, when they played rival Hatteras in the first round of the conference playoffs. The Dolphins played a tough physical game, and completely out ran the Hurricanes, coming away with a victory by a score of 67-49.

The rest of the conference tournament was cancelled due to bad weather. The Dolphins were the last team left out of the state playoffs, which everyone had hoped they would make. The Dolphins had an overall good season; even after losing 4 seniors from last year, the Dolphins were still able to be tied for 6th place in the costal 10 standings.

The Dolphins have a lot to build on for next year – the team will practically be identical as there were no graduating seniors. Next year will be a great year for both Dolphin teams and I already can’t wait! Anyway, its been a great season, and now its time for baseball season and track season, which is a sport that has just been added to Ocracoke. I hope to see you at the games and meets!
