Lady Dolphins Take Trophy at Holiday Tournament!

This past weekend was the 4th Annual Ocracoke Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Ocracoke welcomed the First Flight Nighthawks, the Gateway Crusaders, and Greenbrier Christian Gators. The games began on Friday, and the first matchup of the day was Gateway vs. Greenbrier’s girls’ teams. The game had a slow start, but Gateway’s team came out to an early lead and never let up. Gateway would go on to win the game and play the winner of the First Flight vs. Ocracoke game.

The next game of the day was First Flight vs. Greenbrier’s boys. The games started off very fast paced, both teams were getting run outs, and fast breaks.

Especially Greenbrier, they had such outstanding guard play, that they could push the ball up the court very fast, and hit almost all of the 3 pointers they took. First Flight struggled to keep up with the pace of Greenbrier, and found themselves down 52-33 at the half. In the second half Greenbrier continued to attack the basket and pressure First Flight. The final score was 102-76, Greenbrier won and was on to the championship game against the winner of the Ocracoke vs. Gateway boy’s game.

The 3rd matchup of the day was the Ocracoke ladies vs. First flight. In this game, the ladies did a great job of pushing the ball up the floor and attacking the basket against an undersized First Flight. We also did a good job of attacking the glass and racking up the rebounds. The Lady Dolphins had an early lead and were up 3 at the half. In the second half, the ladies did a good job at working the ball around to extend their lead. The final score of the game was 64-54, and the Dolphins were on their way to the final game, with a matchup against Gateway.

The final game of the night was Gateway vs. Ocracoke’s boys. The winner of this game would face Greenbrier in the final, and the loser will face First Flight in the third place game. To start the game off, the Dolphins jumped out to an early lead. At the end of the 1st quarter, the Dolphins were up 7. In the 2nd quarter, the Dolphins let the Gateway get back into the game, as they outscored the Dolphins by 11 in the quarter and were up by 4 at the break. But in the 2nd half, the dolphins fought back into the game, and the game went back and forth, both teams exchanging leads, until regulation was over, and the game was still tied. The game went into overtime, and once again the game was tied, but one of Gateway’s guards, hit a go-ahead 3 in the final moments of overtime, and Gateway escaped the game by 3. The final score was 57-54.

The match-ups for the Saturday games were, First Flight vs. Greenbrier (Girls), 2nd First Flight vs. Ocracoke (Boys), 3rd Ocracoke vs. Gateway (Girls), and lastly Greenbrier vs. Gateway (Boys).

In the first game of the day, first flight’s girls faced off against Greenbriers girls. For most of the game, First flight dominated. They had many run outs and completely outscored the Gators. The final score was 48-22.

The next 3rd place game was Ocracoke’s boys vs. First Flight’s boys. In this game the Dolphins did a much better job against First Flight than they did the first 2 times. Even though we played much better we still ended up losing the game 79-50.

The last game for the girls, and the championship, was Ocracoke vs. Gateway. In this game, the Dolphins completely dominated, coming out to a commanding lead very early. By half time, the game was 29-10 in favor of the Lady Dolphins. The Dolphins ended up winning the game 48-36 and were champions of the 4th annual Holiday tournament!

And in the final game of the tournament, Greenbrier took on Gateway. This game was almost completely controlled by the Gators, Gateway tried their hardest to fight back, but even with all of their efforts, Greenbrier won the game 58-42.

The next time you can watch the Dolphins at home is this Friday 12/19 against conference opponent Creswell! Games start at 4pm. Go Dolphins!
