Ocracoke School will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 8th.

Approximately 162 students from Ocracoke School will be walking and rolling to school Wednesday along with parents, teachers and community leaders.

Walkers and bicyclists will arrive at the school at 7:45. Once the students sign-in near the playground, there will be prize giveaways.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by Ocracoke School which is a member of North Carolina’s Safe Routes to School program. As a small community, Ocracoke residents have the special opportunity to walk and bike regularly. Ocracoke School is emphasizing the right way and the safe way to be a pedestrian or cyclist.
