Island Poets Welcome Special Guest Phillip Shabazz

Enjoy some culture at Ocracoke's live poetry performance this Friday night. 

The Live Oak stage at Books to Be Red will be ablaze with words as acclaimed NC poet Phillip Shabazz performs selections from his latest collection, Flames in the Fire: Poems. He'll be joined onstage by Kelly Shinn, Mickey Baker, Carmie Prete, Pat Garber, Carol Soo Lee, Waylon Underwood, and host Bob Ray. 

Phillip Shabazz is a poet, author, and teaching artist from Carrboro, NC. He is a poet-in-the-schools for North Carolina, and is affiliated with the NC Arts Council. He teaches poetry and creative writing workshops to kids and adults across the state. His writing explores issues of community and culture in America.

Island Poets Welcome Special Guest Phillip Shabazz

For a sneak preview, tune into WOVV 90.1FM on Thursday night, he will join local poet and artist Bob Ray on the "Rabbit Opera" radio show to discuss poetry and art. Phillip will perform some of his poems live over the radio waves, and you can listen from wherever you are on wovv.org. 

You can also meet Phillip at Books to Be Red on Friday afternoon at 3pm when he'll be signing copies of Flames in the Fire: Poems. 

The Friday evening Poetry Performance begins at 7pm, and is free and open to the public! The event is sponsored by Ocracoke Alive and Secret Garden Gallery.
