Obituary for Maurice Ballance

Edgar Maurice Ballance, 87, of Ocracoke, died Friday, July 11, 2014 at his residence.

Born in Ocracoke, he was the son of the late Elisha and Emma Gaskins Ballance. He was a retired port captain with the NCDOT-Ferry Division, a commercial fisherman, a carpenter, and was a veteran having served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Ballance is survived by his wife, Maude Garrish Ballance; a daughter, Judy Ballance Lawson and husband, Michael of Ocracoke; a sister, Lorena Ballance O’Neal of Ocracoke; and two grandchildren, Michael Brandon Lawson and Marcus Andrew Lawson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Garrish and Clara Joyce Ballance; and five brothers, Henry, Lawrence, Elisha, Jr., William, and Reginald Ballance.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 1:00pm at Ocracoke United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Bryant. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ocracoke Health Center, P.O. Box 543, Ocracoke, NC 27960.

For those who wish to bring food for the Ballance family, please bring it to the Methodist Church Rec Hall before 11am on the 17th.
