Beverly Barksdale Sheppe died at age 94 on Tuesday, January 14th 2014 at Rosewood Village at 500 Greenbrier Drive in Charlottesville Virginia.

Beverly was born in Hopewell Virginia on June 29th, 1919 to Wallace Channing Barksdale and Helen Weaver Barksdale.  She was christened Mary Beverly Barksdale. Her siblings were Walter Lane Barksdale, Susan Elizabeth Barksdale and Wallace Channing Barksdale. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1939 with a degree in Social Work. She served in the Red Cross during World War II, first in the Pacific then in Germany after VE day. Beverly came home and received a Masters in Social Work after studying at Columbia University.  She practiced social work first in North Carolina then in Charlottesville Virginia. Beverly married Dr. William Marco Sheppe Jr. in 1955. She enjoyed the practice of social work but retired to become a full time homemaker and mother in the late 1950s. She had two daughters, Suzanne Stacy Sheppe in 1956 and Leslie Channing Sheppe in 1957.

Beverly returned to the practice of social work in the late 1960s for several years to work with Dr. Frederick Westervelt in the newly established renal dialysis unit at the University of Virginia Hospital.

Beverly loved her family, patients, many dogs and cats, the Virginia countryside and Ocracoke Island North Carolina, which she began visiting with her sister Susan Barksdale before the Second World War.  Since her husband Bill Sheppe’s death in 2004, Beverly has lived with her sister Susan in Charlottesville.

Beverly Barksdale Sheppe is survived by her sister Susan Barksdale of Charlottesville and her younger brother Chan Barksdale of Fort Collins CO, her children Suzanne Sheppe of Charlottesville and Leslie Sheppe of Laurel MD and her granddaughters Emily Augusta Latimer and Sarah Louise Latimer. Her sons in law, John Graysar and Christian Latimer also mourn her passing.
