Superintendent Barclay Trimble announced today that National Park Service (NPS) contract crews, DOT Construction/Barnhill Contracting Company, have begun repair work on several popular beachside parking areas and beach access ramps on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands this week.

The work, expected to be completed by the end of June or earlier in some locations, includes repaving and restriping of parking areas and improvement to the entrance of Ramp 55 and the Pole Road to improve off-road vehicle (ORV) access.

Park visitors can expect to see temporary closures of the parking lots adjacent to Ramp 27 & Ramp 55 and the beginning of the Pole Road, and in the parking area near Milepost 64.5 on Ocracoke Island until the work is completed.

The work at the various sites will be coordinated to allow ORV access to the beach via the existing ramps which might include short delays.  Ramp 55 will be closed for a short duration as a new section of asphalt is extended approximately 100 feet from the parking lot towards Ramp 55.  An exact date for this phase of the work has not been scheduled.
