Mystery of the Sea

Marissa Gross isn't your typical beachcomber.

She's drawn to old bones, teeth and fins rather than sand dollars and scotch bonnets.  A palm sized shell, blackened by years of being buried, caught her attention while walking after Hurricane Sandy, and she was amazed to discover the interior swirl filled with crystals.

"I've never in my life picked up a shell and thought a crystal would be in it," said Marissa.

She was walking with amateur jewelry maker Tara Grey, who thinks the crystals may be labadorite.  What caused them to form inside the shell is a mystery to them.  The pale yellow crystals are clustered inside the rim, and some are almost a centimeter in length.

Finding the shell felt like a good omen, and made the day seem magical, said Marissa.  "We weren't even looking for shells, but crystals I can live with.  I didn't pick anything else up the rest of the day."

If anyone has any insight into why crystals would form in a shell, please share your knowledge with Ocracoke Current.
